It’s Makeover Time…and our first GIVEAWAY!

Working with Melessa is like being at a slumber party–we don’t get much sleep, but we have SO MUCH FUN.  We wanted to do a post on how great style can be affordable, so I generously offered to buy some new clothes for myself.  The sacrifices I make for you!

Everything is from H&M, so it’s trendy and relatively inexpensive (except the orange trench).  We’re not affiliated with them at all–we just like their stuff.  I started buying my girls’ clothes there this year, and I am kicking myself for not shopping there years ago.  I know some people have been put off by some of the less-than-modest clothing options sold there, but like any store, you just have to focus on the items that match your style, and ignore what doesn’t.

Here’s my before…

I have a classic/preppy style.  Melessa wanted to use that and update it to mesh with current trends, so we headed to the mall and spent a good chunk of time scouring every rack.  I absolutely LOVED the outfits she styled.

And shooting was much more fun than senior pictures (“tilt your head…a little more…a little more…”) or family pictures (“PLEASE, everyone smile!  I’ll buy you any candy you want!”)  It helped that we were near the Stone Arch Bridge in northeast Minneapolis, so everything around us was a gorgeous mix of historical and modern.  And I wasn’t really self-conscious, since we passed a few other photo shoots and a student film being made. After a while, I began to wonder why I’ve never done a photo shoot before.  It seemed like I was the only novice!

The real kicker for this photo shoot, however, was having Melessa do my hair and makeup. I have looked basically the same since college, and it blew me away to see myself look so different.  I felt like a powerful and pretty CEO.  With straight hair and fake eyelashes.  (I’ve never worn those before!  They’re much more comfortable than I thought they’d be.)

Here’s me after Melessa dressed me up… she’s like my personal fairy godmother…

Although I am certainly happy with who I am and how I look day-to-day, it was sort of empowering to know I can look completely different and still be me.  Changing my look on occasion doesn’t mean I’m pretending to be something I’m not.  It’s just another way to have fun.  That might seem like an obvious point to those of you who are used to changing up your look, but it was news to me.

How about you?  Have you ever daydreamed about changing your look, even just a smidgen? Are you up for a makeover?  Because it’s time for our first GIVEAWAY!!!!  If you live in the Twin Cities, Melessa will give you a free makeover, including hair, makeup, and styling tips based on your current wardrobe!  This would be a great way to get ready for a big date.  Or just a fun way to spend a few hours on yourself.

Just comment below (not on Facebook) AND subscribe by putting your email in the box marked “Subscribe.”  On a computer, the Subscribe box is at the top right corner of the page; on a phone, it’s usually at the bottom.  If you’ve already subscribed, just comment below!

Don’t live in the Cities?  No worries!  Next week we’ll let you know about more great giveaways for ALL our subscribers, no matter where you live.

The makeover giveaway ends at noon on Tuesday, so make sure you comment and subscribe.  Good luck!

Let me begin to say Laura is without a doubt one of the most confident folks I know! Her smile, her attitude, her glowing lovely face and true genuine concern for other people makes her absolutely GORGEOUS! As she said in the post, she didn’t need this make-over to feel pretty. We’re just two girls having fun, and who doesn’t love to play around with new looks;).

Also, I’ve done my share of photographing models in the past and Laura was a natural. Super relaxed and very easy to work with.

What a sharp wardrobe power-up but the real message is in seeing the skill it took to make that gorgeous smile remain your number one beauty feature. No matter how we transform ourselves, our own essence has to be the star in the story. Thanks for showing how that can happen.

Incredible photos, clothing and model!! I LOVE all the photos and outfits, hairstyles, but the one where you are reaching down (knee bent) to check the zipper on your pants is sooooo cool! Melessa–you could make it big time in NYC (anywhere, really) as an artist of many talents. Laura, I wonder how Brian liked the ‘new’ you!!?! 🙂
