Our Favorite Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives

If you’re like us and love restaurants that are super low-key but have great food, then today’s post is for you!  Don’t get us wrong, we are huge advocates for eating super duper healthy most of the time, but it’s fun to go out have something sweet or awesomely greasy once in a while too.  We aren’t going to put anything into our bodies that just tastes okay–if it’s greasy and high in fat and calories, we want to make sure it’s delicious and worth it!

We love independent places that have been around for a while.  They’re the perfect way to relax and enjoy the folks you’re with.  These places are great for a date night or going out with your kids.  If you’re on a date, make sure you bring a mint for afterwards… The comfort food might make you so relaxed that you want to take and nice evening drive, find a quiet place to park and look up at the stars… and, well, we will leave the rest up to you. 😉

Here are a couple places we love and recommend for you in and around the Twin Cities of Minnesota.

Wagner’s Drive-In in St. Louis Park, MN

This place has great hot sandwiches, burgers, fries and, of course, onion rings!  We love how you just drive up, flip a switch, order, eat, flip a switch again, and drive off feeling so satisfied.

Now, if you love good malts and shakes, I mean REALLY GOOD MALTS & SHAKES, then you need to check out these next two places…

50’s Grill  in Brooklyn Center, MN

This place is just cool.  It’s all retro inside, and your waitress is even wearing a poodle skirt. All she needs is some pink Bubblicious gum to blow perfect bubbles with as she serves you, and it’d be a perfect flashback to the ’50s!  (I suppose that wouldn’t pass restaurant code, though.)

They have GREAT burgers, ribs on Friday nights, and pot pies that are homemade there.  And of course YUMMY pies, shakes and malts!!

The only thing I don’t like there are the salads.  They are rather pathetic, but that’s not what you’d come here for anyway, right?

We couldn’t decide what dessert we wanted, so we got three (kinda embarrassed to admit that, but they were totally worth it). They were SUPER AWESOME!!  If you’re near Minneapolis, you need to try out the 50’s Grill!

We ordered a chocolate caramel malt.

And a slice of coconut cream pie.

And a creamy raspberry cheesecake. Oh yeah!  Worth it!

You only live once, right?

The other great place to get malts and burger is…

The Malt Shop in Elk River, MN.

This place is near and dear to me because 1) their food is great, 2) they have AWESOME SHAKES AND MALTS, and 3) it’s where Nate and I had our first date. 🙂  You’ll love it!

Finally, if you’re mad about donuts, we have another great dive that’s super fun to hang out in…

Glam Doll Donuts  on Nicollet Avenue in Minneapolis.

If you’re like us and like things hot and fresh from the oven, try this place in the morning, after your awesome night out with your hot date (or with your family–you pick).  They have a variety of yummy, creative flavors.  Images are from Glam Doll Donuts.

We are going to start posting about great places to eat all over, even across the deep blue sea.  We want you to be in the know wherever you are, so you can enjoy an awesome experience whether you’re on a date, with friends or with family.

So here we go!!  We’ve been talking with locals in these areas.  If you live in or are traveling near Washington, DC; Virginia or Maryland, you need to check out these dives.  I’ve heard even the President likes them!

I’m a sucker for pretty much every flavor malt/shake on the planet…if they’re thick and creamy.

Wow all of these places look and sound AMAZING. I love going to local restaurants, because I feel like that’s where you find some of the best food in the area. And I wish we had a 50s diner where I live!! I would go there all the time.

Glam Doll’s has vegan donuts too! When I was going dairy free because my baby had an allergy and I was craving donuts, we went there and they had some awesome vegan options!! Very tasty.

Nice! If ever near Duluth (MN), Gordy’s Hi-Hat in Cloquet is amazing. It has been there since ~1960 and has great burgers and fries, and Gordy still works there.

Northern Waters Smoke Haus in Duluth has amazing sandwiches. It’s now our go to place when we are on the North Shore.
