It’s Pie Time!

By Melessa

Today I wanted to show you a few fun gadgets I’ve invented for my day job as Designer and Art Director of Talisman Designs.  They make pie baking SO much easier (because, contrary to popular belief, the phrase “easy as pie” is wildly inaccurate, at least for most double crust pies).  Not to mention, these tools make perfect gifts!!!

Just as an FYI, I do not receive any kind of commission when I show you the things I have invented and designed.  I just love what I’ve created and, better yet, they work and will come in handy for the baking season.  “Where can I buy them,” you ask?  Just click on the links below!

Oh!  And THE Rachael Ray (yes, you read that right) will be featuring the Pastry Guide on her show this Thursday, November 17.  Don’t miss it!  Be sure to watch!!

Adjustable Pie Shield

If you like your crust thick, with a nice tan, then this will be perfect.  It is the only one of its kind and adjusts to fit  8″ – 11.5″ regular and rippled pie crusts.  Buy it at Talisman Designs or Amazon.

Fun side note… When I photographed this image a few years ago I needed a last minute hand model to complete the shot, so I called up Laura to see if she could help me out.  Of course she said yes and was right over!  She has hand modeled for me a few times. What are friends for?!  I’m so lucky to have her in my life. 🙂

By the way, do you guys know how much work goes into a photograph?  If you work for a large company like Target, there are many hands that contribute.  You have someone for making the props, someone for adjusting lighting, someone for staging the product, someone to photograph it, and a director (I’m sure more folks too, depending on the image).

Well, for me working at Talisman Designs (a very small company) I make the majority of the props, like the pies above, I stage it, light it, photograph it, and direct it myself, because I’m the creative director too.  And then I show it to my boss for feedback and changes. Crazy right!?!

Thank heavens Laura is such an awesome cook, plus it looks good!! I don’t have to bake everything I shoot for this blog!

Pastry Guide Dough Cutter

This is the product that will be airing on the Rachael Ray show  this Thursday, November 17!  You can buy it at Talisman Designs or Amazon.  This puppy cuts perfect circles from 4″ to 14″.  Place it in the center of your dough and rotate to cut a perfect circle.

Pastry Wheel Decorator

I love these next two tools so much!!  If you’re not good at making pretty pie crusts, or you need to throw it together fast but you still want a nice, professional look, don’t worry, this will do it for you.  Just roll the gadget around the edge to mold the design.  Check out the YouTube video.  You can buy it at Talisman Designs or Amazon.

Pastry Wheel Cutter

This one makes the cutest scalloped lattice.  Each strip is perfect, so no need to measure.  The 2 wheel design pre-measures 3/4″ wide strips.  It’s super fast and easy!  Check out the YouTube video.  You can buy it at Talisman Designs or Amazon.

And of course there are really cute hot pads that work as sweet trivets, hot pads and jar openers.  There are more colors offered on both Talisman Designs and Amazon.

Stay tuned until later this week for lovely beechwood products that will be perfect for your Thanksgiving table.

This is SO cool. I think I have the perfect gift for a pie baking son who hasn’t had an oven for two years in the Philippines and will want to make LOTS of his favorite dessert when he arrives home.

So, do they give you credit on the show Melessa? So exciting! You are famous!

No. I don’t get credit for my work. It’s through Talisman Designs.

Wow Melessa, thanks for making me look as good as my Grandma. Your handy gadgets will make my pie look homemade even if the crust came out of a box. What a genius you are for engineering ( no small feat) tools that will make being a holiday wizard so easy for the rest of us.

Oh Martha, once you have a great homemade pie, you just can’t go back to store bought! Have fun with it!

I love all these things Melessa! Adiack was just complaining about the burned crust rim of an apple pie we had last week and we googled your product and didn’t even know it was yours!

I love these gadgets because even the kids can use them and we all know how kids like to “help” in the kitchen.

You are amazing Melessa! You do make pie baking look easy and fun and for the holidays I love to bake, but have always been intimidated by making a double crust pie. I need to just do it! Our family loves the hot pads, we use them all the time and enjoy the fun colors!

Just this weekend I had a pretty decent pie crust fail. The chocolate pudding filling went in a bowl and the crust went into the garbage. It was a sad, sad day. These could certainly help me raise my game.

Oh, I feel your pain, Amy! The important thing is that you saved the chocolate.

Oh my word!! I had NO idea you invented the pie crust shield! I bought one a couple of years ago and remember thinking it was completely ingenious!
