Deck the Halls and Make them Sparkle!

This is the very first Holiday season in 14 years where I’m not rushing to finish a catalog last minute!  The Talisman Designs catalog is done, I’m working on research and new designs concepts for 2018.  I feel like I have time to take a deep breath, exhale and focus on my family!  So, when I have time, I love to create magical dreamscapes for my family to experience. During the Holiday season I love to bring the magical wintery wonderland inside.

I love whimsical environments.  I love to imagine, but even more, I love to make what I imagine come to life where I live.  I love to inspire people and make them feel happy.  I also love to think outside the box and create different looks.

This year I wanted an icy frosted look on my porch that complimented my powdery arctic door.  I went to Bachmans and found this owl that I totally fell in love with.  This little guy gave me the inspiration I needed to create my wreath and set the look for my frosted porch.

Isn’t this little guy so cute!?

I used the same branches from my fall porch design, but lightly sprayed them white with spray paint and them sprayed them with Snow Frost for added texture.  The plastic icicles I purchased at the dollar store (6 for a buck!).  I then sprayed the icicles with spray adhesive and a extra fine white glitter to give it more glimmer and sparkle.

My greenery is a combination of real and fake foliage.  Yes, I sprayed and glittered those too!  I’m obsessed with glitter and sparkle.  Ask my husband!  Every year he say’s, ‘Oh yeah it’s that time of year… glitter… Oh look there’s glitter everywhere… even in my bed…  Oh look I some how managed to get it on my face…”  🙂

You can purchase fake foliage at any craft store.  Sometimes it pays to wait until after Christmas to get the best deals and try it next year.  I filled my large pots with frosted pine cones at the top for texture.  Yes, I painted the pine cones too.  I know it seems like a lot, but I’ve had a bunch of this stuff for years and it still looks great!  You don’t have to do this every year.

Now we are entering into my house.  As you walk in on the left side is an accent wall that I built out of old trim, old church doors, and crown molding scraps.  I’ll do a more detailed post on that later.  For the Holidays I string it up my grandmother’s old garland and the bulbs she put on her tree.  These ornaments date back to the 40’s and 50’s.  I love them!!

Next is my little vintage deer collection.  These were my great grandmother’s.  These go back to the early 1900’s.  I absolutely love my hand-me-downs, they carry so many memories.  I wish I could hear all the laughs and sweat conversation these ornaments witnessed over all the years they were placed out for each holiday.  The beautiful and moving stories they could tell!

I love to hang items and make them look like they are floating.  Above my table is my tree branch chandelier covered with about 100 or so glass icicles and snowflakes.  It’s very soft and delicate looking.  I love how light reflects off of them and they gracefully spin around.

When my mother was first married she took a ceramics class and made a Nativity that she has passed on to me.  I love the colors she chose as she carefully hand painted each one with care.

Below are my great grandmothers old angel candles that I simply adore!!

What home is complete without a mistletoe?!  My mistletoe has a little elf sitting in it and it hangs above my backdoor where most family enters my house, so I have more chances to steal kisses from my boys.    😉

And yes, you guessed it, that’s vintage too.  It was my grandmother’s!

You know that scene from Harry Potter where they enter the main hall at Hogwarts and you see all the floating candles? Well that’s what inspired me to create this look when I decided to hang more snowflakes above and around my tree.

Some of these snowflakes I made and some I adjusted to make better.  The one above I found at the dollar store.  I sprayed and glittered it for more texture.  I also cut them a bit more for more detail and character.

The one below I made out of pipe cleaner, then sprayed it with white spray paint and glittered it.  I told you… I glitter everything.   😉

What fun holiday ornaments and decor do you have that are filled with memories?  I want to know!!

XOXO

Melessa

Thank you! This time of year really reminds me of how much I miss my grandparents! I love having decorations that have been used by family from past years! Such a sweet reminder of how wonderful my family is and the memories that were and are being built around them.

Unbelievably beautiful! Even more amazing in person. You are truly gifted.

Glitter for Paynter’s is like cinnamon for me. My mom used these cinnamon scented pinecones at Christmas that flavored every food (probably in our neighborhood) for months. I could literally taste cinnamon in the air a few houses away from mine.

    Memories…

Thank you for your super kind compliments! I totally know that cinnamon smell! Isn’t it funny how smells can totally take you back in time? I LOVE cinnamon in my hot chocolate! Try brewing a pot of that on your stove and send a yummy chocolate cinnamon sent through your house and down the street…

I think that’s what I love so much about the winter. Everything is calm (on the outside), nature is resting and the colors are so graceful and cooled down. I just had to bring that look inside my home!!

Thank you! It’s really fun to tell my kids about where these decorations came from. I need to do more crafts with pipe cleaners. They are so easy and cheap!

So lovely! I appreciate that you have touches of whimsy too, it’s not just serious hardcore Christmas without any sense of fun.

I miss family so much at this time of the year, especially our family that has passed on! The ornaments that you and I have saved that belonged to our parents, grandparents and great grandparents do take us back to wonderful, happy memories. You have definitely created a wintry wonderland of glitter and sparkle! Your home looks beautiful and I wish so much that we loved closer to one another!

Your house is at least 500% cuter than mine. I just don’t have the eye for the finishing details–I love the way the look when they’re all up but I can’t ever figure out how to make it happen. And so we have framed concert posters on the wall and Legos on the shelf. I need you to give my house a makeover so it doesnt like it belongs to a teenaged boy! 😬
