Laughter has some seriously impressive benefits. Check out some of the ways that laughter can make you not only feel good but also improve your health.
I did some research online and laughter really does have some pretty amazing benefits, including:
Laughter releases endorphins, the body’s feel-good chemicals. Endorphins promote that “high on life” overall sense of well-being and can even provide some temporary pain relief.
Laughter strengthens your immune system. By decreasing stress hormones and increasing immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies, laughter actually improves your resistance to disease. Regular laughter can actually help prevent the common cold.
Laughter relaxes your whole body. Did you know that a good laugh can actually leave your muscles relaxed for as much as 45 minutes? It relieves physical tension and stress. Feeling stressed? Watch a goofy video, catch up on a funny Twitter feed, or read some jokes.
Laughter protects and strengthens your heart. Laughter can help protect you against a heart attack and other cardiovascular problems by improving the function of blood vessels and increasing blood flow.
Laughter burns calories. OK, so it’s no replacement for regular exercise, but one study found that laughing for 10 to 15 minutes a day can burn about 40 calories—which could be enough to lose three or four pounds over the course of a year.
Laughter lightens anger’s heavy load. Nothing diffuses anger and conflict faster than a shared laugh. Looking at the funny side can put problems into perspective and enable you to move on from confrontations without holding onto bitterness or resentment.
Laughter may even help you to live longer. A study in Norway found that people with a strong sense of humor outlived those who don’t laugh as much. The difference was particularly notable for those battling cancer.
