A Welcoming Front Door

If you don’t know it by now, I LOVE color! It draws me in like a moth to a flame. It can say a lot about a person, as you well know from my “Meaning of Color” posts.

No matter the time of year, colorful front doors can make such a statement for your home. Even better, it’s an expression of you and your family dynamic and makes people want to come in and learn more.

A painted front door can change the whole look of the house. The easiest way to achieve that is with some good outdoor paint!  Don’t be afraid to paint a back door too.  That pop of color can stand out and make a huge difference.

When I went to Europe, colorful doors were everywhere.  If I had enough memory on my camera, I would have taken photos of every door I saw.  Trust me.  It was everywhere and so beautiful. The very best part was, it didn’t matter if you were rich or not, these doors were still charming and inviting.

Here are some perfect examples!

I added black because, a black high gloss door on the front of the right house is so AWSOME!

Of course, when I came back, I was like, “Why haven’t I done this yet? This is ridiculous.” So, I painted my front door!

Here’s my door “before” color.

Also, I just want to be clear, I know and fully understand that not everyone loves color like I do.  I totally respect that.  Neutral tones for front doors are still color, they are just more toned down. Adding a complimentary color in the same color family as your home’s exterior can totally work just as well and be just as beautiful.

The tones of my house where already very warm, so I wanted to do a cooler tone to bring balance.

I knew I wanted a blue door to complement the red brick, but needed to put up a handful of colors to see what direction would work best.

What color would you pick?

Floral arrangements and holiday decor come and go so why not have some permanent color?

Here is my door “after” through the seasons.

After looking at those doors from Europe, I am tempted to add some additional molding around the front door… We’ll see what Nate says. 😉

Because the Secret Garden is one of my favorite books, I’m kind of sort-of obsessed with lush florals and natures texture.  I can’t get enough of it.  I’m totally a hopeless romantic.

The weather is still amazing! You still have time to paint your front door if you haven’t yet.  What color would you choose for your house?  I’d love to see photos!  Post your photos on

Have a wonderful weekend!
