DIY Plaid Pumpkins

A couple of weeks ago I showed you guys a quick way to make a simple fall wreath. This week I set up my porch and made an armful of fun plaid pumpkins. Check out my DIY on putting these pumpkins together!

I LOVE plaid! It’s the perfect pattern for fall. It’s cozy, stylish and inviting.

I thought it would be fun this year to add some of that darling plaid pattern I love to a few pumpkins on my front porch. Why not, right!? You know how I am about layers and texture. It is especially fun mixed with an assortment of pumpkins.

Let’s get to it!

The color theme for my porch is black, white, yellow, and orange. Yes, I kept some of my greenery in because it’s really warm here and I didn’t want to trash those lush leaves just yet.  Other than that, I’m sticking to very traditional colors this year. That being said, I fell in love with these two plaid fabric patterns.

You can find these at your local JoAnn’s store right now.

DIY Fabric Plaid Pumpkins:

There are a few ways to do this craft, but the way I want to tackle it is by making strips and gluing it to fake pumpkins. That way it’s snug and tight against the pumpkin. I can also have more control on how the squares in the pattern line up and fold together.

What you’ll need for fabric pumpkins:

  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • Your favorite fabrics
  • Pumpkins (I recommend fake ones) You can buy these at any craft store or even Target.
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape
  • Glue or spray adhesive
  • Glitter or paint (your preference)
  1. Measure the height of your pumpkin.
  2. Measure the circumference of your pumpkin.
  3. Cut fabric to size.4. Cut strips. (Because my pumpkin is wide I chose to cut my strips 4.5″ wide. There is no magic number, you get to choose how wide you want the strip to be).
  4. Center your first strip on the pumpkin and hot glue underneath the sides of the fabric (see image below).
  5. Cut the center of the strip (a little over) 1/3 of the way up from the top and bottom.
  6. Take the two flaps and overlap them. Pull them (a little) tight so they form to the shape of the pumpkin while you hot glue them in place.
  7. With the next strip make sure you line the pattern up with the proceeding strip.
  8. Repeat steps 5-8 until you have covered your pumpkin.
  9. (Optional) Apply glue to the stem of the pumpkin and glitter the stem.

DIY Mini Plaid Pumpkins:

What you’ll need for mini pumpkins:

  • Spray paint or paint (your preference)
  • Sharpie Markers or paint (your preference)
  • Glue or spray adhesive
  • Glitter or paint (your preference)
  1. Spray paint or paint your pumpkins the color of your choice.
  2. Once dry paint or use a sharpie marker to illustrate your plaid pattern.
  3. (Optional) Apply glue to the stem of the pumpkin and glitter the stem.

If your lines aren’t perfectly straight, just touch them up with your background color. Most importantly, have fun and don’t worry about it being super perfect. It’s more about the overall layering effect it will have on your front porch or step.

Here’s my Fall porch!

How are you decorating for fall this year?

You know what details I love?! The orange sparkly pumpkin stems and the black plaid repeated in the wreath hanging. I think it really pulls it all together. Another great job, Melessa!

I just love the way this porch is designed! The mums are gorgeous too. But the plaid pumpkins are the best part! I was lucky enough to see it in person and I was totally blown away!
