My Daily She has been giving away really cool products all month long, plus little extra surprises with the big giveaways and there’s still more to come! Don’t miss out!
Remember when I almost cut halfway through my index finger while removing the pit from an avocado? Well, live and learn. This week, I’m giving away an awesome tool that can help avoid a trip to the hospital and becoming the next “Avocado Hand” patient.

Side note: I’d like to acknowledge my son (age 12) Sam’s photography work in this post! I’ve been teaching him about photography and he was my big helper for today. He took the photos while I used the product! Well done Sam! You did an amazing job! Love you!!

Avocados are a big deal in our house. We eat them all the time. I have been cutting avocados with a basic kitchen knife for years. It wasn’t until that one day where I was behind on dinner, late for an appointment, rushing through the kitchen (sound familiar), I cut the avocado in half, then as I struck the knife against the pit, the pit was already loose, the blade slipped went through the avocado and through my index finger underneath. It happened so fast!
The staff at the hospital had already seen my situation a lot. They called it “avocado hand.” They even said, it’s not uncommon and a lot of their patients have injuries due to cutting avocados.
Long story short, after reconstructive hand surgery and months of therapy, plus months of only being one-handed, I still don’t have full feeling in that finger and probably won’t ever get it back. Not to freak you out, but I too am a confident chef and baker in the kitchen and never thought it would happen to me.
Gratefully, there are awesome functional tools on the market that can ease that worry. While I was in Chicago I met with the Progressive team and shared my story with them. At the end of our conversation they gave me a new avocado gadget that hasn’t even hit the market yet. How fun is that!
Now one of you gets to win it!

Here’s what I love about this tool:
It’s much more SAFE!
- The blade has a rounded edge at the top, so it can’t pierce through the skin like a sharp pointed knife can. I feel very comfortable with it in my hands.
If you want to be even more safe you can slip the green cap back over the cutter/blade before you remove the pit, so you’re not holding the blade in your hand. I would recommend that way if kids are using it.
- Removes the pit easily (that’s the big seller for me). I also like that the little spikes are plastic. That area needs to be more sharp in order to remove the pit. Smack it hard against the pit, twist it and lift up.

- It also scoops the avocado out very well.

- It’s dishwasher safe.
- It also stores safely in your drawer.

I did a lot of research on avocado gadgets, and there are a bunch to choose from. So, if you don’t win today’s giveaway, let me direct you to my other faves that’s on the market now! Click here to buy OXO Good Grips 3-in-1 Avocado Slicer.
WARNING! Please note: with many kitchen gadgets, there are sharp edges, so it’s important to have adult supervision if you’re letting your kids test it. I love both of these products and find them much, much safer than the standard kitchen knife, when it comes to working with avocados.
Tis the season for warm weather, more avocados tossed on a salad, avocados in sandwiches, avocado shakes and, of course, fresh guacamole! ENJOY avocados and be safe! 😉
