You can never be too young or too old to appreciate outer space. Ready for another bedroom before and after that is out of this world?!? 🙂
Anytime I work with someone it’s important that I get to know them and learn about their likes and dislikes. This young teenager was all about planets, stars, and galaxies! Can you blame him?! He wasn’t super picky about colors as long as they communicated space. That made it pretty easy for me. He already had an existing hand-painted mural that carried the color story for his room and he still really loved it. Plus, a really cool nightstand that his uncle painted for him. So there were some sentimental items that made his room even more special.
After I collected all the info, room dimensions, colors, storage and of course the most important of all, budget, I was ready to start planning and building that shopping list for Mom.
Here’s the BEFORE

Step 2: Room Layout
Unless a bedroom is really small or depending on the shape of the room, I really encourage people to move their beds in the center of their room. It’s a common mistake for folks to stick their furniture against the walls.

Step 3: Shopping List
I made a nice long list with links in an email and all she had to do was click on the link and order. It was that simple!
Here’s the AFTER!

His room needed to feel bigger, brighter and a little older. My client was a smart, creative kid so I wanted his room to feel organized and detailed with some sophistication. Because the mural carried a deep navy with pops of brighter colors, for a higher contrast—and a bolder look—I used mostly red and a little yellow to play off the gray and blue.

Blue is a cool color by nature, and it works well with pretty much any other cool tone so gray felt the most natural against the black furniture. Using color combinations like these gave his room a sense of stability and calmness.

Another reason I centered his bed in front of his windows was so he could really see his entire mural. The only thing I changed to the mural was adding more stars to it, so it illuminated by night, making it way more spectacular to admire before bed. I also went crazy and covered his ceiling with stars too. I mean, why not?!
Because he’s getting older, I picked out art that had a more detailed illustration and a timeless retro comic feel. I felt that a “Star Wars” element might have pigeonholed him.

I love to add interesting elements above our heads that draw our eyes up. He already had the planet mobile, but that didn’t feel like enough, especially in a kids room, so I hung neutral wool garland and a thin strand of lights for added layers.

His lamp was probably the biggest splurge in the room. I think it was worth it. I loved it because it replicates a planet in a modern way and it was sophisticated giving the room more interest and character.

I kept his bed simple, neat, and easy to put together in the morning. He already had the bedding. I added some new patterned sheets and then layered it all up with a bright red pop in the center. Even his cat loved it!

We only added a few new elements to his room, decluttered a bit and moved a few items around. I love, love, love creating fun environments and transforming spaces!

July 20, 2018 at 9:38 amYes! The design and it’s layout should make sense to the person living in the space. Because it’s a kid, (and we know kids love to make messes) it should be a setup that’s easy to maintain. Thanks so much for your comment!

July 20, 2018 at 6:39 pmWow! It looks so much classier and grown up than before. Even the ‘small’ detail of adding more stars is such an improvement. I was looking at so many things as I went along, I’m glad you mentioned that addition. I went back to compare the before/after mural and it sure was so much better with the added stars. I love everything about the room! You are amazingly talented, Melessa.
