Our youngest (Gabe) is 11 years old and very ready for a little upgrade to his bedroom. He is very eccentric and extraverted. He loves bold patterns, art, color, and was very involved with how he wanted his room to look. I love that about him! Keep scrolling to see the low budget shifts we made to match the feel in his room to his tween personality.
As I mentioned in the last post, we weren’t going to put a lot of money into his space; no new paint color or big furniture changes, but he was definitely due for a shift here and there. So, in next week’s post (Part 2) I’ll go into my DIY’s and what I found to pull his funky look together (very inexpensively). Gabe really wanted his room to have lots of different textures. He was very adamant about having a furry, masculine pillow on his bed.
He loves anime, graffiti, comics, urban style and of course LED lights. Not only did he request LED lights to border his ceiling, but also his window and under his bed.
We kept his bed and nightstand (of which he is NOT a fan) but, he has to wait until high school for a new bed, and by that time I’m sure he’ll want a more mature look. But this works for now and he LOVES it! It’s a pretty cute tween boy bedroom if you ask me, though I may be a little biased… 😉
There are still a few stuffed animals he’s not quite ready to part with (and that’s fine with me). There’s no rush to grow up too fast!
Okay, hats off to graffiti artists everywhere!!! It is NOT easy and it takes a lot of control and craft with spray paint to create graffiti. This was the first time for Gabe and me to tackle a graffiti design on canvas. We had a bunch of fun working through it together.
The curtains I custom made from shower curtains and will show you more on how I pulled them together in next week’s post.
Gabe has some pretty fun shoes that naturally flow with his art and decor style on his shelves.
Gabe loves to paint so we showcased his art and framed a couple of his pieces. I am a huge advocate for displaying kid’s art. Their artwork deserves to be seen but can often end up in a pile despite good intentions. You’re showing your child support by doing this. This is one way to boost confidence and self-esteem. You are directly communicating with your child when they walk into their home and they see their work proudly displayed. It’s one way to let them know that they have your full support. So, here’s one way of displaying their creativity and lifting their spirits.
Gabe hydro dipped his Vans (shoes). I love his confidence and color choice. He wears them and gets lots of compliments.
I love this kid’s style! It’s fun to experiment and be funky. I also love that both my boys have their own distinct style that fits them.
It was sooooo much fun thinking outside the box in his room. It makes me want to explore the art of graffiti more, too.
