We’ve all made trendy choices that we regretted later on. I think all of us can truthfully agree we are all guilty of this. I know that I’m so guilty of this. Ha! I took a look at some of the biggest decor trends through past decades that made me cringe.
Your personal style is, obviously, completely personal. You need to be you! I really, really mean it! Just because it’s a new year, someone in the fashion industry says something is “in” or “out” does not mean it’s law. If there is a style you love and don’t want to let go of, then I say “Hold on to it!” We all have different lives and different perspectives. Plus, we all live in very different areas of the world and like different things – that’s what makes us all uniques and beautiful. However, trends are a fact of life and things become so popular at times that they can really take over in the market (and practically brainwash us) and then the buzz wears off and it is forgotten for a few decades before it resurfaces in a new way. It’s fun going into a new year touching on what seems to be done, and what’s new for 2019 style. So, don’t be frustrated if you are still in love with some of these trends.

Chevron
Yes, I know you loved this pattern, but it’s out now. You can replace this old pattern with clean timeless stripes, gingham, a large floral print or even a textured solid colored surface. There’s a lot of new options out there. If it’s on your walls, replace this pattern with a coat of paint and your house will feel more fresh and new.

Brown + Bronze Kitchens
I cannot express to you the huge difference painting my cabinets white made in my little kitchen. You’ll find out soon enough the transformation it made. My cabinets were so dark brown, plus the countertop was brown, too. It was all just too warm and too brown. Bronze and brown together is out now. There needs to be a better balance of cool and warm. Freshen up your kitchen with light-colored cabinets, countertops and updated fixtures and appliances to coordinate. Add warmth by incorporating bronze or brass through cookware, hardware, fixtures, art frames or even a potted plant.

Vinyl Phrases
“Live, Laugh, and Love.” You know what I’m talking about. Some of us have plastered vinyl words like this all over our homes. Get more personal and sincere with the sayings you bring into your home. Artfully-display and frame loving text that make you smile, and uplift you. Looking for good examples? Check out my shop! Guess what? I can do custom sayings, too. Just email me at mydailyshe@gmail.com for a quote.

Wallpaper Boarders
No more strips of wallpaper in the middle of your nursery or trim the top of your wall, this trend needs to go to nap for a really long time. Don’t be afraid of going bigger and bolder with patterns. It can be an accent wall of a solid wall color with patterns covering the bedding, or even some new art. There are lots of other ways to add color and pattern in your rooms.

Mason Jars
Yes, this can still be a trend. This multi-purpose mason jar can do just about anything: candle holders, salad containers, soap dispensers—the list goes on. I know we all did at least a bunch of those DIY’s. But now there’s a very functional place for it and it can go back home doing their original job of canning preserves because canning is a huge food trend again.

Hollywood Mirror Lights
Stop blinding yourself with those harsh lights! Use softer lighting that doesn’t wash out your face. Your lighting just needs to be even. That doesn’t mean you need a light for every angle of your face.

Ferns Everywhere
You can have too much of a good thing. Ferns are stunning! I love them. But you don’t need to put them in multiple places all over your home. Your living room doesn’t need to look like a greenhouse.

Pine Furniture
Don’t misunderstand. The occasional pine accent is fine and dandy. But back when I was a kid in the 80s and 90s, it was just about everywhere from bookshelves to dressers, to cabinets and chests. Too much!

Vertical Blinds
Okay (I’m being super honest), I really hates these things. Super annoying to open and close. Try some stylish curtains as a statement in your room instead.

Sponge Walls
This was one of those Tuscan looking crafty things we all thought was cool back in the 90’s. It was a lot of work, too. You either nailed it and it looked like a cool Italian concrete wall (with even coverage) or it looked like your kid had fun throwing a sponge against the wall. There are so many new and inexpensive options out there now. I love peel and stick wallpaper. It’s affordable and there are so many designs and textures to choose from. Plus applying it won’t take nearly as long. Or a fresh coat of a solid color doesn’t hurt either.
What old trends are you excited to say goodbye to?
XOXO
