I love making custom art for my home. This was the last project for my kitchen before the reveal.
I’m finally at the end of all my hard work toward an affordable, updated kitchen. It always takes longer when you’re doing a lot of the custom work, even down to creating all the original art yourself. It takes time and planning.
Every five to six years I paint over one of my existing paintings. Each work of art in my home has at least two to three older painting buried under the newest one. Don’t worry, I take photos of all of them. I hate storing items I never use, so this is my way of updating what I have.
BEFORE

This painting looked fabulous with my old cobalt blue geometric rug. There are days I miss having some of those vibrant tones around, but with my new home transition, I still have pops of color. My new look, as I’ve mentioned in past posts, leans more towards the Georgian style. So, I wanted this painting to feel more romantic, but still colorful and gestural, with a touch more of the feminine.
For a long time, I’ve wanted to do a floral painting for myself, but never had the right look in my home to execute one, until now.
Floral paintings are a little tricky. If done wrong, they can make your space feel old and dated, or they can make a space feel alive and bright. My goal with this piece was to be a bridge for the other little pops of color in my kitchen, so everything felt more balanced and connected.
When I start a project, I’m in it. That means I tune everything else out. So, it’s hard to stop while being in the moment and tell yourself, “Melessa, stop and take pictures of your progress.” I did my best to remember so you can see how I started and finished this painting.
PROGRESS

Notice in these photos that I don’t stick to one type of paint. Just like my eclectic taste in decor, I also have an eclectic taste in paints. I’ll even use wall paint and mix it until I get the color I’m going for. Whatever works!

I didn’t want this painting to feel tight. I wanted it very loose and abstract.

Almost there…
After I finished the painting, I toned down the gold frame. It was too bright so I used a silver metallic paint, mixed it with a little black, brown and gold paint to create an aged faded look to the frame. More importantly, I didn’t want the frame to over power my painting.
AFTER

I’m really happy with how it turned out. The colors from this painting pull all the elements in my (little corner) kitchen together. It’s bright, cheery and feminine (which is very needed as I am the only lady in the house).

Next week, I’ll show you paintings that my sweet Gabe painted as I was teaching him about Van Gogh and finally reveal my kitchen.
Have a wonderful weekend!
XOXO
