I wanted to take a break from talking about my basement, because, quite frankly, I need a little break from it. Instead, I want to chat about how creative you can be with design. The sky’s the limit really. You just need to start thinking differently. But the real question is: How far are you willing to push your personal space? Are you a risk taker?
Design is all about reaching out and taking some risk. There’s a lot of planning that’s involved, but even then, mistakes do happen. Believe me, I make mistakes, but, I learn so much in the process, too.
Don’t misunderstand, I’m not talking crazy design risks that costs thousands of dollars. I’m talking about edgy decor risks. Like, how you might hang something.
I love it when I walk into a home and you can already feel the family’s personality come through. It doesn’t have to be perfect. Yes, it should feel balanced and have flow, and yes there are some rules that need to be followed, which allow room for some unorthodox design, but that isn’t a bad thing. I think it’s a fabulous thing! It shows that you know who you are and makes you look confident.
There is no right or wrong style either. If you love the 80’s then own that style. If you love art nouveau, then do it! Or if country is your thing, go for it! But, whatever your style, do you know how to push it further to really make a statement?
As I’ve traveled in different areas of the world I’ve found some pretty amazing decor in Europe that has forever changed the way I feel about how design can be done in the home.
Let’s start with this image. What’s your first impression when you see it?
Would you think to hang your plates this way or would you be more traditional with them and have them centered above a bench or table?
There is no right or wrong with this, it’s all personal preference.

I personally LOVE the unorthodox look. It’s a bolder statement this way and feels more like art.
How about how we display pottery or textured items? Would you consider mounting them to a wall?

To me, texture is everything. It’s already on your couch and a couple other places, but why not on your walls, too?
Would you consider experimenting more with color? You can use stronger colors in bold ways…

or in softer ways, but still make an impact.

Neutrals with a single pop of color can make bold statements, too.

Did you notice in the four images above pertaining to color how the neutral tones help balance each of the rooms?
What about those unique statement pieces? Don’t overlook them. A funky side table or accent chair can really add just the right amount of personality to your space.

Does your art have to be perfectly symmetrical?

No, it doesn’t.
Does it need to be hung at the right height? Yes! You still need to balance the art on the wall even if it’s symmetrical or asymmetrical. Rule: The artwork’s center should be at a height of about 57 inches.

I guess what I’m trying to do is getting you think outside the box. Don’t be afraid to try new things. Experiment a little. Move away from thinking everything needs to match or be hung in a certain way. Allow yourself a bit more free!
So there you have it, for now… 😉
Did any of these images give you some ideas? Tell me about it!
