Trends come and go, but there are some that have more staying power than others. Part of my job at Talisman Designs is forecasting trends. I’m always researching consumer behavior, finding patterns in the economy, looking at how people live all over the world and watching political events. All of those things combine to give me data that helps me forecast and set trends for the future. S, without further ado, here are a handful of trends/styles I predict that you’ll see play a leading role through the 2020’s.

The 2020’s are all about attitude. Making a statement is the new way of living. Being bold; not being afraid of who you are and loving life is the way to be.

BOLD COLOR
The traditional, safe neutrals that you’re used to are on the way out. They’ll have a more creative twist. Gray will be used differently. You won’t see it on the walls. Everyone loves a color or a few colors and there’s no better way to make your home distinctively your own than with unique combinations of your colors mixed with custom pieces, fabrics and textures. It’s also time to consider some color on your wall vs gray. You’ve heard me say this over and over again: your home should reflect you and your family.
WARM COLOR
Warm tones are coming back. People love feeling cozy, and these colors do the trick. Cool tones are still being used, but the home is turning away from lot’s of cool to more a balanced feel. Tans are beginning to dominate the grays.
JAPANESE WAY OF LIFE
The past decade was all about minimalism. It was the perfect first step for us to declutter our lives, because now this decade is all about having balance, organization, calmness, and bringing nature into our homes and lives. It’s more than just having fewer things; it’s also about incorporating the right things, too.
BLACK & DEEP COLORS
I love black! You’ll be seeing bolder black as well as other deep color palettes in decor, doors, patterns, walls, trim, furniture, area rugs and even tile. It’s the perfect way to make metals, like hardware, pop and shimmer.
METALLICS
An increase in new metals such as dark polished nickel and varying shades of chrome will play a role. Brass and gold will also be mixed in to help it feel layered.
CANE FURNITURE
Natural materials will be everywhere. Cane textures will be appreciated once more. They are forever a classic and nostalgic accent. You’ll be see more cane accent chairs, buffets, cabinets and baskets (to say the least) adding an elegant texture and statement in multiple rooms.
CHARACTER
Smaller efficient homes are on the rise. People aren’t dreaming about a big house anymore. They want personal cozy spaces full of character and lots of unique charm. No wasted square footage and no boring spaces. The desire to have real furniture and antiques in your home is more appealing now.You can still incorporate both classic lines and modern lines. Trust me, the more you mix the more timeless your look will be! But with more of a nod to color, a little more furniture and more drama in the furniture.

TRIM & DETAILS
Again, folks want more character and beautiful design. Old is new again. Walls with texture and thick molding will be on the rise. We’re going to see a lot more fresh, new ways to be clever with heavy wood-paneled walls, trim and molding. There is more of a desire to have things built with more of a story and detail. Resurrecting architectural elements or taking the time to lightly restore them rather than throwing them away.

PLAYING WITH PATTERNS
Design is shifting away from the minimal all-white. We are now embracing maximalism via pattern layering and (yay!) more color. After all, design should be fun and what could be more engaging and creative than approaching any space, whether indoors or out. Let your imagination go wild and mix colors and patterns that make you smile. Make your space happy! 🙂

COLOR IN THE KITCHEN
Adding more color pops in your kitchen is always a good thing. Don’t worry, I don’t ever see the classic white kitchen going away, but colorful kitchens with mixed materials are here. Playful door styles and detailed profiles will be seen in social media more and more.

GLOSS
Matte finishes have seen there day. It’s time to switch it up with something sleek and more polished. However, as I’ve said before, mix and match your finishes, so you’re not stick with one look.
DARK WOOD
Darker flooring, cabinets and furniture really go well with bold colors and metallic finishes, so it’s no surprise that this is coming back, but not in the was it use to be. New rich stains will be experimented with – charcoal grays, deep blues and even black stained wood. These shades will cause any space to feel more sophisticated. If you haven’t noticed, I’m seeing this more and more on movie sets, too.

NATURE
Earth tones and elements from outside will be around as well, but accented with color. Mixing light and dark woods will also compliment each other and strengthen the story in your home.

CURVES
Hard lines in furniture need to mixed with more curves. Designers are moving into soft flowing edges to make the space feel more loose and friendly.
Personally, I’m loving that we are moving back into the attention to detail and antiques. You can’t beat the craftsmanship of some antiques especially with furniture items. So, don’t be so quick to get rid of all that stuff your mom gave you!
The 2020’s sound pretty fun to me! Which styles are you most excited about?
