I want to give you a glimpse at a cute little home I’m fixing up. I love, love, love this project because this house is going from your standard everyday home to a custom filled interior, full of antiques and unique charm all done in a very, very affordable way. Plus, you guys all know how much I love antiques right?!? I’m obsessed!! And here’s the perfect example of why.
When it comes down to attractive rooms, first you don’t need to blow a ton of money. But you do have to hunt for things and that requires time. Second, it’s all about finding those one-of-a-kind gems and placing them in just the right spot that gives your room that WOW factor. Weather you’re a maximalist, a minimalist or somewhere in between, it’s really important to have the right flow and balance in your space. That means you can either let your items have some breathing room so they can really make their own statement, or you can group items close together that compliments and supports each other so it doesn’t look like any one item is lost or fighting another item for attention.
My client is all about antique stores, thrift stores, Craigslist and freebies. A girl after my own heart! This is her first home, so it’s extra exciting for her.
Before we started hitting antique stores I went through her home and reviewed all the goodies she had been collecting for years. Honestly, I was in heaven! She had so many fun things to work with, but had a difficult time knowing how to use and display them. When I walked into her bedroom, my eyes lit up and widened so big that my muscles were straining around my eyes. “Is that a vintage fireplace mantle?!?” YES! SO COOL! The fact that she had purchased a vintage fireplace mantel years ago was just further proof that we are going to be lifelong friends. She always had it tucked away in her bedroom, but that was about to change.
Listen, you don’t always hit gold when you go antiquing or thrifting. In fact it’s always a gamble. But, we were able to score on a couple of great decor items. What she really needed to complete her living room with was a rug and a couch but because of her budget she was nervous about the cost of those items.
We didn’t find any couches or rugs antiquing or thrifting, but I did pull her into Ashley Furniture and told her to start looking for yellow sales tags on rugs. We had a budget that we needed to follow, so she was up for hunting and compromising to finish her living room. Long story short, we were able to find two rugs, a couch, and an accent chair! We found some fabulous rugs on sale for under $75 dollars and we came across a couch that had an upholstery error so it ended up being on SUPER sale. Bonus for her!
So here’s her before photo of her living room when she moved in.
Here’s a sneak peak at the progress toward furnishing her super cute space.

Isn’t this so charming?! Don’t you want to hit up some antique stores now?
