Beds In Front Of Windows

Not all of us can have the ideal bedroom, with windows, doors, vents and closets placed exactly where we want them. So, we have to break the rules a little and work with what we have to make the room feel cozy and relatively balanced. Today I want to show you how placing a bed in front of a window isn’t as taboo as one might think.

To place, or not to place a headboard against the window, that is the questions? You know those unspoken rules that we heard from our parents, like: the bed should face the door, it’s important to leave space on either side of the bed, and don’t block windows.

Well, lots of people (including decorators and designers) place headboards under windows! And more importantly, if done right, it looks great!

There are some practical reasons why you want to avoid window bed placements, but sometime due to the size and layout of the room you have no choice.

It’s one of those old school rules that is made to be broken, like “don’t wear white after labor day.” The bed is the centerpiece and focal point in the bedroom. The placement is important. The headboard that you choose is also very important when considering bed placement. The headboard should be sturdy. Using no headboard or a small headboard just gets lost and doesn’t work.

Symmetry isn’t always an option, so make sure if you are going to put your bed in front of a window (or windows) that it’s complemented by other pleasing objects that help make it feel balanced. When the bed placement is balanced it’s creating a restful, peaceful bedroom.

Whether it’s the only option or just the best one, here’s what to do with a window behind the bed. It’s totally okay to put your bed up against the window.

Consider some of these options.

Cover window with thick heavy draperies. With a colorful or strong choice of curtains framing the bed, the window, the curtains and everything in between become one big and bold visual focal point. Make sure you hang the draperies high and wide, so as not to cover any more of the window than is absolutely necessary. You can open the draperies during the day to invite sunlight in, and close them at night for a dark restful night’s sleep.

Use your headboard like a wall between you and the window.  You need to make sure that you leave enough space between the wall and headboard so your blinds or drapes can naturally hang.

Pay extra attention to accessories and art; consider them when planning the entire composition of the room. The art will also contribute to balancing the room.

Be sure to keep your room clean, too! Making your bed creates a healthy retreat that also is conducive to a good night’s sleep.

Don’t worry about any rules. You ideally know what looks right in your space, so if you’ve found a bed in-front-of-a-window solution that works for you, go for it!

Do any of you have your bed placed in front of a window? Do you have advice for those looking to rearrange their bedroom this way?

If your room feels off balance because you’re avoiding the window, then yes, don’t be afraid to use the window like a wall. Good luck!

We did it, on your advice, and my husband finally came around! The room was awkward before but now even with it front of one of the windows, it’s much more symmetrical and he’s so much happier. You were right!!
