As I’m furnishing my basement, I want to add an extra layer of cozy down there. So, I’m layering it up even more by adding a fun accent rug that makes it all the more comfortable and inviting. So, I’m bringing in a little fur and an animal hide accent rug.
With our longer winter season, it makes the most sense to do this. I mean why not?! Basements in general are cooler places, so it’s even more important to make the area as warm as possible.
I know there are a lot of folks that aren’t comfortable with real animal skin. But with all the faux options now, that doesn’t even have to be an issue. Every year manufacturers are getting better and better developing faux products. Some of them look so good, you wouldn’t even know the difference. They bring an eclecticism and exoticism that will always remain classic. And you know I’m all about that!
Also, as a side note for the the more exotic rugs like zebra or cheetah, never fear: these are definitely printed on cowhide. Nowadays it’s illegal and has been for a long time. But even for those opposed to using cowhide, there are so many amazing faux choices out there.
If you are one of those who want the real deal there are certain things you should know about genuine animal hide before you invest in one. Ideally in today’s time, they are most functional on a bed, chair or couch. Hides are valuable for the warmth they provide. If you want them as a rug, it needs to be a place that doesn’t get a lot of traffic. Shedding will occur and diminish over time. And let me tell you, they will shed if not treated correctly! They are not meant for high-traffic areas. Living rooms and guest rooms are all acceptable places for a hide rug or across a sofa or chair. Across your bed or as accent wall pieces are also perfectly fine.
As I was shopping for faux hide I wanted, I really love the look of reindeer hide. They have a beautiful mix of tan, white, brown and gray.
Decorating with animal hides can really bring out a luxurious look. In any space it really brings out a punch of character and says, “Chic!”
My favorite part is faux hides and skins are relatively child-friendly; they wear very well, and can repel stains better than silk or wool rugs do.
I love that animal hides work in any design scheme, whether it’s contemporary, traditional, eclectic, or even rustic. It really works everywhere!
