It’s been a busy week now that my boys have stared distance learning. But we are in a routine and Nate and I have found a flow to balance both our day jobs, kids and our creative side. Keep scrolling to see what new basement projects I’ve been doing on the side this week.
A lot of folks have asked me, “Do you ever sleep?” The short answer is: yes. In the last couple years, I have been getting 7.5 – 8 hours of sleep. My sister and my mom call me the energizer bunny, “She keeps going and going…” I don’t know, I’m just wired that way. Some folks can spend hours baking, chatting or reading… I like to build and make stuff. And the more I flex those creative muscles, the more my mind wants to build and be fueled with more ideas.
Before our state went into lockdown, Nate and I picked up our supplies to finish the other accent wall in our basement. Originally, I was going to make this wall with all my dad’s barn wood. Then I was considering a brick wall.
Don’t worry, I’m still using this wood. I’m going to make some art with it for the basement, instead.

I’ve decided on a wood paneled wall to mimic our built-in cabinets on the other side of the basement.

If any of you have ever worked in a basement, you know that NOTHING is square. It’s drives me crazy! Careful measuring and using a level can only go so far. The rest you have to eyeball. And we had to do that with this wall to make it feel level.
Here’s the blank slate blue wall (looks gray, but it’s not).

For this design I wanted to frame it.

I’m still caulking and filling. I’m hoping today I can paint two coats and have it ready by Saturday. That’s my goal anyway…
On the other side of the basement, I’ve been trying to decide on a fabric for my bench cushion along my built-in. Here are the fabrics I ordered a month ago.

I was thinking of making the bench cushion myself, but decided to hire it out on etsy. All my samples came from fabric.com.
Here’s the fabric I went with.

I like it because it still feels neutral, it doesn’t hold on to a particular style so it’s flexible with a lot of different looks.
I’m chipping away more and more at the basement. After this wall, it’s the stairs, railings and runners that are left for the carpentry side. Then it’s down to decor and details. Most of it is already in place, but I do have a handful of paintings and art to create.
I won’t wait for all those items though. I’ll start making reveals much sooner. I promise!
I hope you have a great day and are staying healthy, safe, and mindful out there! Sending out lots of love your way.
XO
Melessa
