Thank you for your feedback from last week’s post. I really appreciate hearing from you. 🙂 Deep cleaning seemed to be the theme from all the comments, so today’s post is all about a good deep clean and making your place feel new with a good furniture rearranging. See what I did below with my living room.
Since I’m going to be in my home for a while why not make some adjustments so it feels a little different, but in a good way. The best way to really get to those hard to reach places is by moving things, and since we are going to the trouble of moving large and small items in our homes why not make some adjustments in the process and have a little fun.
It’s a great way to enjoy your home. Moving items around is also a way to make them feel new again. Placing items in a new location gives them a different look as they capture the light of the room in a different way. It can make them feel new again.
If your new layout shifts the flow of your room, you’re also altering traffic patterns and evening out where the floor wears down. You can hide scuffs and scratches, which psychologically buys you more time to live with your old floors and makes them look new.
Another point to bring up are the faded lines or tan lines on your furniture. Natural light is a good thing, but not always to your fabric. Do you have one arm of your favorite upholstered chair looking a little more faded than the other? Even out their tan lines by moving them around.
So…, the challenge I have for you this coming week is A Deep Clean & Rearrange. What are you waiting for?! Let’s get started and start shopping in our own homes!
Here’s how my living room usually looks.

My rug needed a good cleaning, plus a good stretch, so it was time to make a shift. I was a little scared to see what was living under my couch…
Before I moved the couch I swept and mopped the area where I was going to place the couch.

Then I vacuumed the area and over the rug.

Yikes! It was time!

My room is not centered at all. The window, lights and fireplace are all off. Centering my couch with my window is not the right direction for this space. I moved it more to the left and centered it with the room vs the window. This way the rooms still feels large and open. Had I centered it with the window I would have shortened the space by a quarter.
I removed the rug, swept, mopped, and vacuumed then laid the rug parallel with the couch. This really opened up the room as well as visually lengthen the couch (even though the couch is all ready 90″ long).

I pulled the couch away from the window and placed my acrylic console table behind it. By centering my plant with the window, even though the couch isn’t centered with the window, it creates an illusion of being balance.
I wiped down everything right down to the smallest decor piece. Pounded the upholstery with the vacuum ready to catch it and fluffed the pillows.

The drapes and windows are next, however that’s for another day. 😉
I love the shift and newness of this room, plus it’s really clean. I caught Nate looking at items he hadn’t noticed before. It’s fun to sit in different areas of the space and see a new perspective that I’ve never seen before. I’m really enjoying the change and so is my family.

So, are you ready for a Deep Clean & Rearrange challenge? There are many ways to arrange furniture in a room as I stated above.
Here are some tips to follow:
- center your pieces with the room not with the windows
- pull your furniture away from your walls and let your furniture breath
- create a conversation with your furniture and try facing them toward each other to facilitate conversation
- don’t be afraid to angle the furniture
- be brave and try something new, if you don’t like it, you can always move it back
I want to see your before and afters! So please post them and share with me. Let’s have a little fun and enjoy our space in a new way!
Good luck! Can’t wait to see them!
Stay well everyone! XO,
Melessa
