My Office Remodel Plans

Since Nate moved into my office things needed to change so there was a good healthy workflow between the two of us. Let’s get real. My office has needed some serious love since I moved all my stuff into this little space. Oh, yes! I have a junk room that’s not so pretty. If you want to see it, keep scrolling to see my super messy before images and a peek at what plans I have cooked up for our new work area.

Let’s not stall and dive right in. Here’s my exposed workspace where all my ideas come from. What do you think…?

Before

I know, right!? Was it what you were expecting? And these shots are after I picked up, too! Ha! Yep, it’s time to make a difference in here and work on a good affordable storage plan that really works.

My favorite part of this room is Nate’s 4 monitors and my little single one. Ha, ha, ha.

Next Steps

Both Nate and I want this room to feel earthy, calm, warm, and much bigger. This is the room that gets used the most in our house (you can tell!) and it’s time to get serious about good storage solutions to contain the chaos.

We went back and forth about storage cabinets. Do I go white, black, light wood, or dark wood? Do we make the cabinets permanent or not? My walls are off-white so my instinct was to go with white cabinets. We decided not to do a permanent structure because it’s a bedroom next to our master bedroom upstairs and in case we had to move, I want it to sell as a bedroom vs an office.

Since all of the builtins in our home are white, going dark was a nice shift we were willing to experiment with. Plus, I’m the only female in this house so the boys were all in favor of the darker cabinets versus white ones.

After deciding on dark cabinets, I needed to decide between clear doors to show all of my stuff, or be solid to hide it away. Well, to brighten the darker cabinets up and give them some character, we went with glass doors and I’m so glad we did. It’s so pretty!!

Long story short, we bought 2 cabinets from Ikea and they are already set up, designed and everything fits. Yay!!

We are bringing some brown back people! Yep! Nate and I wanted a cozy nook to work in so we went with creams, whites, dark bark brown with warm leather, vintage accents, light basketweaves, a mix of gold and silver, touches of blue and a little plant here and there.

Here are a few things that have been ordered we are experimenting with, so far.

I know I’ve mentioned this before, but I’m an artist, and if you are an artist or live with one then you understand we USE our workspace –  like REALLY use it. I do all types of design work for my day job at Talisman Designs, my interior design job, and the blog. So, it’s safe to say it’s not just my computer that I’m using in this space. I was very particular about finding a decent desk that could take on both big and small projects.  Something that can take a beating but come out still looking good (even if I gave it a few new scars here and there). So, I’m pretty excited about my new desk.

I’m also an old soul, so I’m super excited about using some of my antiques that I just didn’t know what to do with up until now.

Oh, and one more thing! I also found a sweet little place to frame one of Nate’s  landscape paintings that he did with me when we were first married. We drove out to Afton, MN, hiked to a pretty spot and I taught him how to paint. We often talk about that day and dreaming about doing that again. Then we had kids and haven’t done it yet. Ha! Anyway’s it’s a tender painting for Nate and me.

Here’s a tiny sneak peek at the finished cabinets.

I can’t wait to finally start working in a relaxing environment. It’s very exciting for Nate and I. Stay tuned for more updates.

And yes, I’m still working on the basement. I’m on hold due to some shipping delays, but that area is also coming along.

So, how do you feel about the color pallet we are going with in the office? I’d love to hear from you!

Stay well and safe!

XO,

Melessa
