Whenever you choose to have anything custom made or designed, plan on it taking way, way longer than you’d expect…
Custom projects are ideal if you can’t find the right colors, or look, on the market for your space, but it doesn’t always mean cheaper. In fact it’s most likely going to be more expensive.
In my case, it was actually more cost effective to do custom. The thing to keep in mind, is you really need to know what you want, because once the orders in and it’s made, it’s not returnable.
Allow for a lot of time. If you’re in a rush, forget it. Custom work has a long lead time and plan on your project running past its due date.
As I’m re-designing my main floor, I’ve had a variety of custom projects in the works. Everything was supposed to come in last week, but of course things are being pushed out, so my plan to show some ‘before-and-afters’ will have to wait a bit longer.
My reupholstered chair came back and it turned out great!
Here’s the BEFORE

When I had the white built-ins done, it really cooled down the space. The warm brown book shelves balanced the blue rug in the past, however the blue rug with the white built-ins made it even feel more cool, so I wanted to warm and cozy it up more.
For my rug choice I went with a soft vintage Turkish design. It has the right colors that flow through my home. I love it!
The rug has small bursts of a steel blue in it, so I decided to make that one of my accent colors to bring balance to the warmer rug.
I can’t tell you how many fabric swatches I went through. It was definitely over a thousand, but worth it. I love how it turned out.

I made sure the fabric was a timeless herringbone pattern with a very durable finish. I want it to last long and using polyester as a fabric choice isn’t a bad thing.
Here’s the AFTER

My pillows may change every few years, but having furniture with timeless upholstery like herringbone, houndstooth, stripes or leathers (to name a few) can be enjoyed for years.

As I’m still waiting on some other custom items (some, I’m doing myself) for Friday’s post I’ll just show you where I’m at in this room with my holiday decor sprinkled around. It’s not finished, so you’ll see it in process.
Stay tuned for more projects.
XOXO
