I’ve wanted to add trim to these pillars since the moment we moved into our house.
Six years ago I made this illustration (below) in hopes that one day I would be able to make it happen. That day has finally arrived and I am so pleased with how it turned out!
My little hallway has this huge frame to the music room that was begging to be trimmed up. The really nice part was the structure was already there, so no additional dry wall was needed. It was all trim and molding that needed to be added to give this entrance way a little more character.

One way to make your home feel bigger is to bring everything up to the ceiling. That’s trim work, built-ins, curtains, etc. My hallway isn’t very big, but adding bold white molding, suddenly makes it feel like my ceiling height grew by five more feet. It’s a fabulous optical illusion.
In Process

I kept the trim work pretty simple and wanted it to match the pillars on my fireplace so that it all looked cohesive.

If you haven’t had first hand experience with adding molding, there’s definitely extra time you have to spend filling in cracks with putty and caulk, sanding, wiping it down and then painting. The goal is to make the woodwork look like one giant, seamless piece of wood. My arms got a pretty good workout just filling in the seams and gaps. Then comes the priming and painting. For a good opaque finish, you’ll need at least one coat of primer and 2 coats of paint.
For my trim color I used Sherwin Williams Greek Villa in a semi-gloss finish. It’s a beautiful off-white which works universally juxtaposed with cool and warm tones. This color creates a stunning backdrop for both modern and traditional projects.
Here’s the After

I love it! It’s a visual treat that adds a touch of elegance around my little music room.
Have a great weekend!
XOXO

P.S. Here’s a little update on my kitchen… I just ordered my lighting, so once I get those babies installed, there’s some touch up work, finishing my island design, then the photoshoot. It’s been quite the project, but totally worth it. Stay tuned…

January 4, 2019 at 4:26 pmI got all the wood and trim, I hired a contractor to cut and install it per my drawings, then I puttied, caulked, sanded it, cleaned it (no dust) and then painted it 3 times.
