Since Halloween is right around the corner, let’s discuss the meaning behind the color black and why it is mysterious.
Black can evoke both positive and negative emotions.

Fun Fact: If you want to look slim in your clothes or for a photo, try wearing a pop of color on your best features and a dark neutral or black on the problem areas.

Here’s a little science about black. Light has different effects against dark and light colors and how they make you look. Black pigment absorbs all light, so black does not reflect back the light that shines on it. Light colors reflect light away from it. That means both light and dark have an impact on how large or small the color makes an object or person look. Black can flatten a surface, hiding the curves you don’t want seen. Black tones don’t really show the definition of your body like white and the other colors do. When you’re looking at something, you can see the edges that border the object. When the object is dark, the edges are blurred because it appears to have fewer borders. When the object is light there will be more defined lines and a border that’s visible to the eye. Because black does not reflect away the light, it is a deeper field color that makes itself look smaller. Because white does reflect light, its light color draws in the eye. Isn’t that interesting to know? It is an optical illusion.

Black communicates sophistication, control, strong will, glam, excellence, emotional safety, efficiency and substance. It also can communicate power, fear, mystery, death, evil, aggression and rebellion.
Too much black can cause mood swings, oppression, coldness, menace, and heaviness.

Designers love black and feel every room needs a touch of black or a dark neutral to ground the color scheme and give the room more depth.
