The new built-ins are done!!! I completed some more art for the space and my shelves are styled the way I like them… well… for now… 😉
When I was growing up in upstate New York, I had this great friend named Melissa. I adored her and her parents. Sometimes, when I reminisce, I find myself turning into a “Peter Pan,” not wanting to grow up, flying away to Neverland where everyone could be together. I wish we lived closer. Miss you, Melissa!
I loved going to her home. If I had a time machine, I would take my iPhone, go back in time and take endless photos of their home. From my perspective and what I remember, it was a magical place, full of one-of-a-kind creativity. Her parents were both phenomenal artists. The collections of unique antique furniture, the play of colors in each room, the thick crown molding (from living in an old Victorian home), their own large original art with thick stunning one-of-kind framed work, was incredible. It was a feast for the eyes. They also had this large leg in the corner of their living room that always made me smile. I hope they still have it. They inspired me!
I always said to myself, one day, when I have my own place, I’m going to create my own art and make my home look like an artist dwells here, just as they did.
So, here I am trying to make that happen, little by little.
Can I also just say, when you do all your own art work and designing, I cannot express to you how exhausting it is. I’m pooped! IT’S A LOT OF WORK! So, if you are doing that, my hat is off to you.
Let’s take a look at the style I had going on to show you a before shot (taken 6 years ago) that you’ve never seen.
BEFORE
This is how my room looked before I started changing it a few years ago. Yep! It’s got a lot of BROWN! So much brown! This was the look I had since 2003. By 2012, it was really time to update it.

Then it merged into this look. It’s okay. But still, those brown shelves weren’t doing this room any favors. I also needed more storage and my shelves were too crowded.

Here’s what I illustrated for the space as my plan.

I decided not to go with the stained shelf. I wanted the all white look so the items would equally stand out.

Here’s the after!
The entire room has transformed so much!

I designed my builtin bookcases for the sake of extra storage and to add more drama to the space. I LOVE how bright and fresh the room feels. The colors pop! Pottery that I’ve collected for years, my art books and all my own art that I’ve put so much time into all pop now. As Nate and I travel, the elements from our trips now have a place and help convey a feeling and a story in this room.

September 14, 2018 at 7:02 amThank you Heather! When you get to yours, hire someone to paint it! I did my own, and it’s so much work! Between the sanding (between coats) and four coats of paint, I thought my arms were going to just drop right off my body.
