I love antiques! Yes, I’ll be the first to admit I’m an old soul, but antiques are essential and I’ll tell you why. If you’ve inherited a piece or two, don’t be so quick to send it to Goodwill. Image above via onekingslane.com.
Antiques that are inherited from your ancestors are direct links to your own heritage. This is your families history! Antiques are relics and carry a story from the past. They don’t make things like they used to, so the quality is far and away much better than you’ll see in today. These artifacts tell a story of detailed extravagances and troubling hardships from a different time. These products shouldn’t be tucked away and forgotten.

“Imperfect” is perfect! Even if you didn’t inherit anything, don’t overlook the character and story you can bring into your home. I’ll be the first to tell you: don’t buy everything all from the same store! Antiques can add texture, energy, and personality to even the most modern or contemporary decor. Actually, contemporary rooms will benefit most from a few antiques. They will shine in the spotlight. The old pieces balance well with the newer pieces. Give your home character and life. Show more of your personality and history through the pieces in your home.

Here’s something to consider: your antique may have been common in the 1920s or 1930s, or maybe even earlier than that, but there’s no guarantee that it would still be readily available today. So, it’s likely you own a relic of the past that literally cannot be replaced. Think about that! You’re displaying a historical artifact!

These relics can actually start conversations when entertaining guests. If they are balanced correctly they will stand out and will be noticed. Unique antiques can start a real conversation that’s not your typical small talk at social gatherings.

You can’t get any more eco-friendly than shopping for antiques. Hello! It’s 100% inherently recycled and reused. And, if it’s lasted that long, chances are it’s going to live longer than the products purchased off of a Target shelf. As a product designer, I can tell you that things are not built to last like they use to be. It’s too expensive nowadays to do it. However, antiques carry their own set of rules for maintenance and cleaning.

Don’t forget, well-cared for antiques could go up in value over time, so hold on to your inherited antiques.
My favorite part? Antiques are timeless and trend-proof! They never die in the decor world. If you invest in a piece with lovely lines, curves, and construction it is unlikely you’ll never tire of it. They will survive all trends and always be loved and celebrated in your space.

Tip: One of my favorite stores in MN is Hunt & Gather (click here for directions). I love it! Every time I walk in it’s as if I stumbled into the rabbit hole out of Alice in Wonderland. You can find anything and everything there. From vintage busts to maps to furniture… You name it! There’s something there for everyone.
So mix it up! Long live antiques!
