My family and I had to squeeze in a little adventure before school started and let me tell you… Western Montana in something else. If it’s not on your bucket list, you better add it, because it’s a lovely place to escape, and rejuvenate in. Grab some tea, sit back and scroll through the photos I took with my phone last week.
To start our adventure, Nate, the boys and I drove to south western Montana to Custer Gallatin National Forest just outside of Red Lodge, MT . We met up with my dad and camped with him there. If you haven’t done this I HIGHLY recommend you camp there and drive the 68.7 mile stretch of US Highway 212 called the “Beartooth Highway” from Red Lodge to its westernmost terminus at the northeast entrance to Yellowstone National Park. That road takes you from the bottom to the top and through those adventurous mountains that are full of trails, glaciers, pristine lakes and wildlife. You get some of the most unparalleled views of more than 20 peaks towering above 12,000 feet in Montana and Wyoming. It’s absolutely stunning, not to mention chilly and windy, but in a very good way. 😉
These are shots around our campsite.

It was quiet, restful and my brain just absorbed nature sounds and the breathtaking views. I can’t tell you how many times I said to Nate, “We should live here.” It was like, every hour or so.
Beartooth Highway

There were so many times I thought my hat was going to blow away. It was windy!

Me with my dad.

Even when you got to the tops of the mountains, there were new worlds to explore (like the image below). It was like a different parallel world on top of our world hardly touched. So beautiful, so fun to explore.

These photos just don’t capture the depth and immense scale of these landscapes. You’ll just have to see it for yourself!
After camping we headed north up to Glacier National Park and boy-oh-boy was that super fun too!
I think my comment to Nate of “We should live here.” Went from every hour to every 10 minutes.
You know what I really loved were the small towns. They were charming, clean, remote and not overcrowded. It was really nice.
Glacier National Park
We just wandered, hiked, tried to talk and walk with the animals, skipped rocks and sang the “The Hills Are Alive.” I know, I know! It’s totally cliche, but so fun.

I LOVED the flowers everywhere!!

Because of COVID and school starting, it wasn’t nearly as crowded as it could have been. A lot of times if felt like we had the whole dang thing to ourselves. No complaints from us.

Jagged peaks, precipitous drops, deep and sweeping valleys; these mountainous landscapes are unquestionably some of the most beautiful places to see in the United States.
How you been to any of these places? What did you think?
Stay well and have a nice long weekend!
XO
Melessa

September 14, 2020 at 8:52 pmMy son and his family moved to Ronan MY which is situated between the Salish and Mission mountain ranges between Missoula and Kalispell. Truly beautiful, and just north of them is the wondrous Flathead lake. I thoroughly agree that we should live there!
